The EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) was implemented in 2005 to promote the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) in a cost-effective manner.

From 2024, shipping companies sailing between ports in the EU/EEA will pay annual EU allowances (EUA) for greenhouse gas emissions. Emissions will be reported and verified by EU monitoring.

There are significant costs associated with complying with ETS. As of January 6, 2025, Scandlines has therefore introduced an ETS surcharge on all crossings. The surcharge reflects the costs of CO₂ produced as determined by ETS.

All ticket prices include the ETS surcharge.

Please note that the ETS surcharge is added per crossing, so round-trip tickets will be charged twice – once for the outbound journey and once for the return journey.
