ETS Surcharge
To support the EU’s climate goals, Scandlines is introducing an ETS surcharge on all crossings. The surcharge covers the costs associated with the shipping industry’s participation in the EU system for reducing CO₂ emissions.
The EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) was introduced in 2005 to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in a cost-effective way.
From 2024, shipping companies operating between ports within the EU/EEA must purchase annual EU Allowances (EUA) for their CO₂ emissions. The amount of emitted greenhouse gases is continuously monitored and verified by the EU’s supervision system.
To cover the increasing costs related to the EU ETS, Scandlines has implemented an ETS surcharge on all crossings from 6 January 2025. The surcharge reflects the cost of the CO₂ emitted during the journey.
All ticket prices include the ETS surcharge.
Please note that the surcharge is applied per crossing – for a return ticket, two surcharges will therefore be added: one for the outbound journey and one for the return journey.
